Lecture: Why Pericles Matters

Daniel Zalec

Historian Robin Lane Fox delivers the 2012 Dabis Lecture (Department of Classics, Royal Holloway), establishing the case for justifiable reverence of the Periclean legacy, to this day. He maintains that Pericles can be rightly seen as a bold, visionary figure, in an exceptional period of Athenian democracy and culture – from which we may still draw valuable insight. With specific reference to Pericles’ famous Funeral Speech, as recorded by Thucydides, Fox also critiques various interpretations from modern historians.

Lecture date: February 9, 2012.
