A Skeptic’s Guide to the Pyramids

This is a repost of an article which first appeared here in November 2011.
There are links to two “Pyramids” classroom activities at the end; a motivational and interactive practical exercise and a crossword.
There’s a PDF version (text only). https://vicskeptics.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/pyramids.pdf

By Peter Barrett (Canberra Skeptics)

Think of Egypt and you think of pyramids. These impressive objects have fascinated people for centuries; they were even tourist destinations for the ancient Greeks and Romans. What amazes people today is their massive size combined with the precision of their construction. There are people today who believe that this size and precision is evidence that the ancient Egyptians couldn’t have built the pyramids unaided, and that they instead were assisted by aliens or people from Atlantis.

  1. Three important documents in chronological order are, firstly, circa 2700 BC Pharaoh Sneferu’s “Palermo Stone” where we read forty ship loads of timber, imported from Lebanon, for temple building. Translate “temple” to “Pyramid” and the timber was required for the construction process.
Secondly, circa 590 BC priest and scribe Ezekiel records statements made by the ancestors of Hebrew Pyramid builders who speak of wooden” wheels within wheels” machines having four rims that were high and awesome, with eyes all around.
Thirdly, circa 450 BC Herodotus walks around The Great Pyramid and inquires as to how it was built. Priests informed Herodotus that machines formed of short wooden planks were used to raise Pyramid blocks tier by tier.

Four ancient “Petrie rockers” surround a Pyramid block and demonstrate RACK & PINION mechanical technology – circa 2600 BC with the ancient Egyptian four-lobe pinion-pulley. The four sides of square based Giza Pyramids consist of Stone Racks of steps (comparison – four racks of gear teeth) – wooden pinion-pulley lobes (comparison with gear teethed cogs) engage and step-walk the stone racks when hoisted. All four sides of these Pyramids would be used with as many pulleys in use as required, all working independently and simultaneously, easily building Khufu’s Great Pyramid within the documented twenty years of construction. The ancient pulley has a Mechanical Advantage of 2.8 (MA=2.8)
